Mx Features: Cooling
SILENT HEATSINK COOLING

MxD, MxS-hi and MxS-lo back view, rendering.
The Mx modular system is built around an enormous thermally conductive heatsink dedicated to extreme silent cooling capabilities. The Mx heatsink is so massive that it has up to 579% more cooling fin surface area than prior generations of the DHCR Cooling Docks.

Mx heatsink top view, rendering.
The entire top surface of the oversized 6.8 inch long x 6.0 inch wide x 1.9 inch deep heatsink provides unrestricted conductive heat transfer at the laptop processor location for more efficient heat extraction. The heatsink’s coupling plate is specially prepared with a fine hand sanded and polished finish to produce an extra-flat and extra-smooth surface for improved conductive heat transfer. The coupling plate edges and corners have been rounded for laptop setup.

Mx heatsink bottom view, rendering.
The heat extracted from the laptop flows efficiently through the heatsink’s 4 pounds of thermal mass milled from a solid block of 6061 aerospace grade aluminum material. The heat flows into an extensive array of 28 cooling fins that are an incredibly 0.080 inches thin for accelerated heat removal through the heatsink’s incredible 709 square inches of overall surface area.

Mx heatsink w/ passive airflow back view, rendering.
The cooling fins and cooling air channels run continuously from front-to-back with an upward angle to generate passive cooling air currents through the entire heatsink. Open space under the heatsink supplies cool air for more effective silent passive cooling, as well as open space for fan driven active airflows.

MxS-hi bottom view, rendering.
The heatsink’s side support mounting points use 0.125 inch extra-thick pads to create an air gap between the heatsink and side supports. This air gap allows for open cooling airflow around the sides of the heatsink. The air gap and extra-thick pads work together to provide thermal separation between the heatsink, side supports, and exposure to hot exhaust air.
ACTIVE AIRFLOW FAN COOLING

MxD w/ 140mm fan, MxS-hi w/ 140mm fan and MxS-lo w/ Fx 80mm fan back view, rendering.
The Mx product line has been designed for extreme levels of silent thermally conductive heatsink cooling, as well as the option for multiple fan cooling system configurations. The fan driven active airflow boosts the already remarkable levels of silent heatsink cooling. In addition to boosting heatsink cooling, the fan driven active airflows also flush out hot air from around the heatsink and laptop to help maintain ideal cooling conditions.

MxD and MxS-hi w/ 140mm fan back views, rendering.
When the Mx heatsink is paired with the dock supports or the high stand supports, then an enormous 140mm fan can be bolted directly onto the heatsink to boost heatsink cooling performance. The heatsink and side support designs have been optimized for increased cooling airflow and reduced noise with the extra-large 140mm fan size.

MxD and MxS-lo w/ Fx 80mm fan back views, rendering.
When the Mx heatsink is paired with the dock supports or the low stand supports, then a separate Fx Cooling Fan accessory with 80mm fan is available to boost heatsink cooling performance, as well as provide direct processor cooling through a laptop’s center intake vent, such as with the 2021+ MacBook Pro.

Fx 80mm fan and 140mm fan w/ heatsink exploded view, rendering.
Both the 140 and 80mm Mx fan cooling systems offer unmatched levels of modularity and right-to-repairability for fan and electrical component installation, upgrades and servicing. The heatsink includes 8-32 threaded holes with standard 140mm mounting dimensions (124.5 x 124.5mm), and the Fx supports include 8-32 threaded holes with standard 80mm mounting (71.5 x 71.5mm). Each fan system is available with high-end and long-life Noctua fans, and either fixed or variable speeds. Each system uses an external outlet power supply for optimal fan operation that avoids pulling power from the laptop system that would increase internal laptop temperatures and contribute to processor power throttling.

- The Mx is compatible with many other laptops, tablets and devices per the Compatibility Criteria below.
Compatibility Criteria
The Mx is a fully modular system built around the core heatsink component. The top of heatsink has an extra large coupling plate for direct metal-to-metal coupling with a device’s metal enclosure/chassis to thermally conduct heat from the device and into the heatsink. For device compatibility with the Mx modular heatsink cooling system, all of the following compatibility criteria must be met:
- Metal Coupling: For proper heatsink coupling and maximum thermally conductive heat transfer, the back/bottom of the device should have a metal enclosure/chassis and should not have a protective cover/case installed over or on top of the metal surface.
- Flat Coupling: For proper heatsink coupling and maximum thermally conductive heat transfer, the back/bottom of the device should have a flat metal surface free of pads, bumps and protrusions within the heatsink’s coupling area.
- Coupling Area: For proper heatsink coupling and maximum thermally conductive heat transfer, the back/bottom of the device should have flat metal surface that is at least 6.750 inches front-to-back and 5.950 inches side-to-side. A smaller area can work with a device that is smaller than the heatsink and meets other compatibility criteria.
- Air Vents: If the device has a built-in air cooling system, then the device’s vent locations and their direction of airflow needs to be considered, such as the following: 1) The device’s vents should not be covered by the heatsink’s coupling area. 2) The device’s hot exhaust vents should not blow directly onto the heatsink.
- Fit w/ Dock Supports: The Dock Supports position the heatsink above the device’s bottom edge by approximately 0.430 inches.
- Fit w/ Stand Supports: The High/Low Stand Supports have four heatsink mounting options, and position the heatsink from the device’s front edge by approximately 2.700 inches for position 1, 2.150 inches for position 2, 1.600 inches for position 3, and 1.050 inches for position 4.
Testing
TESTING

SVALT model approximate performance comparison, graphic rendering.
The Mx product line was designed to exceed all prior models with extreme cooling capabilities. The Mx's massive thermally conductive heatsink silently pulls heat from the laptop to help reduce laptop temperatures and quiet laptop built-in fans. The Mx’s optional fan cooling system helps tackle extra high-intensity and long-duration workloads.
Test Results
SVALT product cooling and audio performance shown in the graph above is approximate and based on a wide range of averaged and normalized testing. SVALT conducts a variety of tests through conceptual research, product development and final production proving phases. Test results are meant to provide a more general understanding of built-in laptop cooling systems and how they respond to supplemental cooling. Actual results vary depending on a SVALT product’s configuration, fan, fan speed setting, laptop model, laptop configuration, laptop operation, workstation setup, external monitor setup, and overall testing conditions.
Test Laptop Operation
Mx tests conducted with the laptop in closed-screen operation while connected to a single low-resolution external monitor. Comparison tests conducted with the screen open and without an external monitor for high and low stand models.
- As a general condition for all laptop models, adding a high-resolution external monitors and/or multiple external monitors will increase demand on the laptop and generate more heat. Demand and heat generation can be reduced by using only the laptop’s built-in display, or by closing the built-in display and connected to a single low resolution external monitor.
- As a general condition for 2021+ MacBook Pro, the laptop runs cooler when in closed-screen operation and connected to a single low-resolution external monitor as compared to using a single high-resolution monitor, multiple monitors, or running in open-screen operation. As a result of the 2021+ MacBook Pro's back edge hinge venting design, these laptops are among a small group of laptops that do not see a large reduction in temperatures when the screen is open, or conversely, are particularly capable when running in clamshell mode.
Mx tests conducted with multiple Mx model configurations.
- As a general note, results were more similar than dissimilar between the different Mx model configurations. When selecting a Mx model, it is recommended to select a model based on a desired workstation setup, such as the dock supports to position the laptop upright with screen closed and moved aside to free up desk space, the high stand supports to use the built-in display and have it raised higher for improved viewing ergonomics, or the low stand supports to have a low-profile setup with the screen closed or with the screen open to type directly on the laptop keyboard.
- Silent heatsink cooling is approximately consistent across the three side supports
- Fan active airflow cooling with the heatsink is approximately consistent across the 140mm bolt-on and 80mm Fx separate fan cooling system configurations.
- The following slight differences in cooling between side support and fan system configurations were observed:
- For all laptops and devices, the low and high stand supports have a near horizontal laptop support orientation, which allows the weight of the laptop to press down onto the heatsink’s conductive coupling plate, which in turn increases conductive heat transfer between the laptop and heatsink.
- For all laptops and devices, the 140mm fan's larger size allows the fan to generate slightly more airflow for a given amount of noise generation. The 140mm fan's larger size also allows the fan to span the full width of the heatsink and nearly span the full length, which moves more cooling air over/through the heatsink cooling fins and removes more heat from the heatsink.
- For the 2021+ MacBook Pro and other laptops that include a center intake vent along the back/hinge edge, the low stand supports with FxB22 Cooling Fan provides slightly more cooling because the low stand supports have increased heatsink conductive coupling, and because the low stand positions the laptop’s center intake vent so that the Fx Cooling Fan can simultaneously cool the heatsink and drive air into the laptop for direct internal processor cooling.
Mx tests conducted per SVALT’s testing guidelines that control testing conditions.
