Silent Heatsink Cooling
The Mx modular system is built around a massive thermally conductive heatsink carved from solid aluminum with an extensive array of ultra-thin cooling fins for extreme levels of silent cooling.

Heatsink Mass
The Mx modular system is built around a massive thermally conductive heatsink dedicated to extreme silent cooling capabilities. The heatsink is 6.8 inch long x 6.0 inch wide x 1.9 inch deep and weighs 4 pounds. The heatsink is so massive that it increases the MacBook Pro’s bottom surface area by up to 639% and MacBook Air’s bottom surface area by up to 679% to help silently unlock peak performance potential.

rendering showing top view of Mx heatsink
Heatsink Coupling
The entire top surface of the massive heatsink provides unrestricted conductive heat transfer at the laptop processor location for more efficient heat extraction. The heatsink’s coupling plate is specially prepared with a fine hand sanded and polished finish to produce an extra-flat and extra-smooth surface for improved conductive heat transfer. The coupling plate edges and corners have been rounded for laptop setup. The coupling plate’s refined design, manufacturing and finishing allows the Mx heatsink to avoid the use of a “protective film coupling” configuration that significantly reduced cooling on prior heatsink models.

rendering showing bottom view of Mx heatsink
Heatsink Heat Flow
The heat extracted from the laptop flows efficiently through the heatsink’s 4 pounds of thermal mass milled from a solid block of 6061 aerospace grade aluminum material. The heat flows uninterrupted into an extensive array of 28 cooling fins that are an incredibly 0.080 inches thin for accelerated heat removal through the heatsink’s 709 square inches of overall surface area. The Mx heatsink has up to 579% more cooling fin surface area than prior generations of the DHCR Cooling Docks.

rendering showing bottom view of Mx heatsink with airflow arrows
Heatsink Heat Removal
The cooling fins and cooling air channels run continuously from front-to-back with an upward angle to generate passive cooling air currents through the entire heatsink. Open space in front and under the heatsink supplies cool air for more effective silent passive cooling, as well as open space for fan driven active airflows. In order to increase the heatsink’s silent cooling capabilities, the finish is available with a new deep matte black anodize specially developed to improve surface emissivity and radiant cooling.

rendering showing MxDW2 from below
Heatsink Supports
The heatsink’s side support mounting points use 0.125 inch extra-thick pads to create an air gap between the heatsink and side supports. This air gap allows for open cooling airflow around the sides of the heatsink. The air gap and extra-thick pads work together to provide thermal separation between the heatsink, side supports, and exposure to hot exhaust airflows.

Fan Cooling

FAN COOLING FEATURES

rendering showing MxDW2 with 140mm and 80mm fans
Active Airflow Fan Cooling
The Mx heatsink has been designed for radical active airflow cooling capabilities from a variety of high-quality and ultra-quiet fan systems, including enormous 140mm Noctua fans.

rendering showing back view of 140mm fan with grayed out MxDW2 and 14-inch MacBook Pro
Maximum Performance
The Mx product line has been designed for extreme levels of silent heatsink cooling, as well as fan driven active airflow to boost the already remarkable levels of heatsink cooling with minimal noise. In addition to boosting heatsink cooling, the fan driven active airflows also flush out hot air from around the heatsink and laptop to help maintain ideal cooling conditions.

rendering showing back view of 140mm fan with grayed out MxDW2
140mm Fan Cooling
The extra-large 140mm fan bolts directly onto the heatsink for efficient and quiet heatsink cooling. The 140mm fan's larger size generates less noise for a given amount of airflow. The 140mm fan's larger size spans the full width of the heatsink and nearly spans the full length, which moves more cooling air over/through the heatsink cooling fins and removes more heat from the heatsink.

rendering showing back view of 80mm fan with grayed out MxDW2
80mm Fan Cooling
The 80mm fan sits behind the heatsink while the dock supports position the 2021+ MacBook Pros and other laptops with a center intake vent along the back/hinge edge so that the 80mm fan can simultaneously cool the heatsink, flush out hot air, and drive cool air into the laptop for direct internal processor cooling.

rendering showing exploded view of Fx 80mm fan and Mx 140mm fan with Mx heatsink
High-Quality Right-to-Repair Modular Fans
When the Mx heatsink is paired with the dock supports, then customers can choose from a number of 140mm, 80mm and a combination of both 140mm + 80mm fan cooling systems. Fan systems are available with high-end and long-life Noctua fans, and with Noctua’s adjustable speed controller. See fan technical specifications to learn more.

Fan systems use an external outlet power supply for optimal fan operation that avoids pulling power from the laptop system that would increase internal laptop temperatures and contribute to processor power throttling.

All Mx fan cooling systems offer unmatched levels of modularity and right-to-repairability for fan and electrical component installation, upgrades and servicing. The aluminum Mx heatsink includes 8-32 threaded holes for standard 140mm fans, while the aluminum Fx supports include 8-32 holes and threading for standard 80mm fans. The electrical components use standard 2/3/4-pin fan connectors and 2.5mm power connectors for easy interchangeability and upgradability.

rendering showing MxDW2 with 16-inch MacBook Pro and vent airflows
Clamshell Laptop Intake
Apple included the center intake vent in the 2021+ MacBook Pro to improve cooling over the prior 2016 generation. This center intake vent is located along the bottom hinge. It is designed to pull in cold air past the processor for direct air cooling. The dock supports place the intake down for optimal cooling design.
  • Places the intake vent down where the cool air falls and collects, so the intake can pull cold air instead of exhaust hot air.

  • Places the intake vent and processor down in the cool air instead of up where the hot air rises and accumulates.

renderings showing sections through the MxDW2 with fans and the 16-inch MacBook Pro
Clamshell Laptop Fans
The dock supports use a leaning clamshell configuration with the laptop’s center cold air intake down for optimal fan cooling design.
  • The dock design directs 140mm and 80mm fan airflows to flush out hot and drive cooling airflow towards the laptop’s cold intake.

  • The dock design works with the 80mm fan to drive cooling airflow into the laptop’s intake vent to directly cool the processor.

  • The dock design works with the simultaneous use of both the 140mm and 80mm fans.

  • The new second generation dock supports raise the laptop and heatsink higher for improved fan cooling airflows.

Sustainability

SUSTAINABILITY FEATURES

rendering showing exploded Mx2 modular components
Integral Sustainability

Sustainability is foundational to the Mx product line with a modular system that extends product service life and customer value. For end-of-life recyclability and biodegradability, the Mx uses metal/wood product construction and paper-based packaging, both with minimal plastic. As with all SVALT products, the Mx is made locally in the Pacific Northwest with care and a focus on sustainability, produced in small batches, and hand built to customer configurations.

Material Sustainability

The Mx modular product line and packaging system are physical objects that represent SVALT’s dedication to sustainability. The Mx’s modularity was designed for increased durability, flexibility and adaptability to changing customer needs, extended material and product life cycle, and then as close as possible to full recyclability and/or biodegradability at the end-of-life cycle.

The Mx heatsink and aluminum supports are made of anodized aluminum with metal bolted connections, and intentionally minimizes the use of plastics. Aluminum and metal are considered to be among the most commonly and easily recycled materials.

The Mx wood supports are available in a variety of engineered plant-based materials with increased strength, stability and more efficient use of resources. Bamboo is a strong, durable, fast-growing, rapidly-renewable and biodegradable material that is considered a more environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to traditional hardwoods. Black-core fiber is made from 89% renewable and 100% recovered wood fiber.

The Mx modular packaging system is made primarily from cardboard, as well as other paper/plant/fiber based materials that include a varying degree of recycled content. Cardboard/paper/plant/fiber based materials are considered biodegradable, and are considered commonly and easily recycled materials.

The Mx packaging system effectively and efficiently protects products through shipping and for reuse as storage without plastic based materials. A single cardboard box serves as both the product and shipping box, thus eliminating the additional waste of having a separate outer shipping box with additional interior volume fill and cushioning. Modular interior cardboard inserts, boxes and paper envelopes secure components. A paper-based tape with recyclable reinforcement is used throughout the packaging instead of plastic tape.

Company Sustainability

The 2025 release of the Mx product line corresponds with SVALT’s ten year anniversary of its first product release at the January 2015 Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The Mx is the culmination of a decade of industry leading product design and research, and represents the pinnacle of laptop cooling, high-performance laptop workstations and sustainability.

For the Mx, sustainability wasn’t included as an afterthought and isn’t superficially applied branding. Sustainability is an integral and foundational aspect of the entire Mx product line designed from the ground up as a fully modular right-to-repair system. Every aspect of the innovative modular design, high-quality materials, high-end components, reusable cardboard packaging and bolt / snap assembly prioritizes the product’s ability to endure and adapt in order to extend usefulness as far into the future as possible, and when a part or product’s life cycle came to an end, it was designed for recyclability and/or biodegradability.

As with all SVALT products, the Mx is a unique, first-of-kind, best-in-class, and patented/patent pending product. SVALT products are more than engineered solutions, they are objects of substance without distracting noise and flashy gimmicks. Made locally in the Pacific Northwest with care and a focus on sustainability, SVALT products are produced in small batches and hand built to customer order configurations.

Made from 89% renewable, 100% recovered (reduce waste and emissions), low-formaldehyde (no added formaldehyde), moisture-resistant, high-density wood fiber material. The material has a through-core solid-black color with a hard, fine and smoothly sanded face surface that has a charcoal black appearance with light color fiber flecks.

White Hardwood
Made from 9 layers of high-quality baltic birch hardwood veneers to create a solid void-free multi-ply core with formaldehyde-free binder. The baltic birch has a creamy or pale white/beige hue with mostly clear, uniform and light wood grain. The top face has a finely sanded surface without knots or plugs, and the milled edge has alternating light and dark stripes created by the dense, multi-ply construction.

Amber Bamboo
Made from fast-growing, rapidly-renewable and sustainable bamboo in a solid void-free 3-ply vertical edge construction with formaldehyde-free binder. Bamboo ply material makes for exceedingly durable, strong, light, and consistently high-quality milled parts. The bamboo has an amber golden-brown hue produced by caramelizing naturally occurring sugars within the bamboo. The face surface has a smooth finish, and the milled edge shows the two surface layers over the central core layer.

Thickness
Approximately 1/2” thick material with +0.010 / -0.025 inch.

Finish
Unfinished flat face and edge surfaces. The materials are not sealed or coated, and they are left with a more “natural” appearance. While the materials do not require an applied finish, if customers prefer a darker color, brighter reflectivity and aesthetics of an applied finish, then they can choose to apply a wood finish such as linseed oil. Note that if applying a finish treatment, then avoid contacting pads and avoid getting near the pad’s adhesive area as it could result in adhesion failure.

Cleaning
Wipe with a slightly damp cloth, and add a mild dish soap if needed. Note to avoid exposure with no more moisture than a slightly damp cloth, and avoid exposing pad adhesive to moisture.

Variation
As an organic plant based material, there can be variations within an individual part and between parts, which can include changes in color tone (warmer or cooler), color tint (darker or lighter), changes in texture (smoother or rougher), and elements such as knots and small material voids. As a result of variability in material appearance, material sourcing and material availability, the material used for each customer order is subject to change. Product photos are approximate representations of each material type. Material details will be changed and/or updated here within specifications when possible.

ALUMINUM MATERIAL

Material Description
Heatsink milled from solid 6061-T6 aluminum bar stock.

Available Finishes and Colors
The aluminum heatsink is available with the following finish/color options:
- Deep Matte Black Anodize: A deep matte black anodized aluminum with hand and mill finish surfaces.
- Raw Aluminum: Raw aluminum with hand and mill finish surfaces have a mildly bright “silver” like appearance.

Cooling Performance
The heatsink with a dark anodize aluminum finish has a slight improvement in emissivity for increased radiant cooling compared to the heatsink with raw aluminum finish, and the new deep matte black finish has a slight improvement over the prior space black finish. This is only a slight improvement that is most apparent with passive airflow cooling, and is less notable when a fan is added to provide active airflow cooling.

Surface Conditions
The top coupling plate of the heatsink is hand finished to create an extra smooth and flat surface for maximum heatsink cooling performance. The coupling plate surface prioritizes functional performance and may not be visually even and consistent. The rest of the heatsink has a CNC machined / milled finish. The interior walls of the cooling fins and cooling fin channels may have a slightly rougher machined finish as the result of fabricating the incredibly thin cooling fin and incredibly narrow cooling channels required to achieve the exceptionally high levels of cooling surface area within a heatsink made from a solid block of aluminum.

Surface Finish for Anodized Aluminum
An anodize finish applied to the raw aluminum increases the thickness of the aluminum’s natural oxide layer, making it more resistant to wear, scratches, and corrosion. The anodize process includes a dye, sealant and other steps to improve appearance and durability. The heatsink’s top coupling plate surface prioritizes functional performance and may not be visually even and consistent. The heatsink’s new deep matte black finish prioritizes cooling performance and so has a more dull appearance.

Surface Finish for Raw Aluminum
Raw aluminum is a strong and enduring material that is naturally resistant to corrosion and does not “rust” like steel. Raw aluminum is inherently stable as the surface forms a thin and protective layer of oxide on the surface when exposed to air, which is a natural type of anodize finish that helps prevent further corrosion. The surface appearance will patina and change over time as a result of this oxidization process, as well as reacting to sunlight, moisture, fingerprints, and other factors.

Care for Raw Aluminum
Keep raw aluminum dry. When handling the heatsink’s top surface laptop coupling plate care should be taken to prevent scratches and exposure to substances that can leave a mark, including finger prints. Surface scratches, marks or other changes to the cosmetic surface may occur over time. Customers may prefer the patina and “weathered” surface appearance, or they can recondition and brighten surfaces as desired. With proper care aluminum can endure for decades and centuries.

Cleaning Anodized Aluminum
Wipe surface with a soft cloth or sponge that is dampened with warm water. Add a mild dish soap if needed. For the heatsink’s top coupling surface, it is recommended to work with the surfaces existing grain from the top-to-bottom and not from side-to-side.

Cleaning and Reconditioning Raw Aluminum
Wipe surface with a soft cloth or sponge that is dampened with warm water. Add a mild dish soap if needed. Additional steps can be used to clean and/or recondition raw aluminum surfaces, including polishing with a polishing product made specifically for use with raw aluminum. Additional steps can be taken as needed to restore or repair, such wet sanding with a fine grain sand paper. Make sure to fully dry raw aluminum with a soft towel and then leave surfaces uncovered to air dry after any cleaning or restoration. For all of the above options, it is recommended to work with the heatsink’s top coupling surface grain that runs from the top-to-bottom and do not work from side-to-side.

Warning
Do not use chemical cleaners, solvents or other substances unless they are specially designed for use with anodized or raw aluminum. Avoid exposing pad adhesive to moisture.

Dock Support Compatibility
The Mx dock supports use a leaning laptop position instead of a straight vertical position to maintain contact pressure on the heatsink’s thermally conductive coupling plate for improved heat transfer, and for easier clamshell mode setup. The leaning position accommodates a wider range of laptop models and sizes, as well as tablets and other devices.

Other Devices
  • The Mx is compatible with many other laptops, tablets and devices per the Compatibility Criteria below.

Compatibility Criteria
The Mx is a fully modular system built around the core heatsink component. The top of heatsink has an extra large coupling plate for direct metal-to-metal coupling with a device’s metal enclosure/chassis to thermally conduct heat from the device and into the heatsink. For device compatibility with the Mx modular heatsink cooling system, all of the following compatibility criteria must be met:
  • Metal Coupling: For proper heatsink coupling and maximum thermally conductive heat transfer, the back/bottom of the device should have a metal enclosure/chassis without a protective cover/case installed over or on top of the metal surface.
  • Flat Coupling: For proper heatsink coupling and maximum thermally conductive heat transfer, the back/bottom of the device should have a flat metal surface free of pads, bumps and protrusions within the heatsink’s coupling area.
  • Coupling Area: For proper heatsink coupling and maximum thermally conductive heat transfer, the back/bottom of the device should have flat metal surface that is at least 6.750 inches front-to-back and 5.950 inches side-to-side. A smaller area can work with a device that is smaller than the heatsink and meets other compatibility criteria.
  • Air Vents: If the device has a built-in air cooling system, then the device’s vent locations and their direction of airflow needs to be considered, such as the following: 1) The device’s vents should not be covered by the heatsink’s coupling area. 2) The device’s hot exhaust vents should not blow directly onto the heatsink.
  • Fit w/ Dock Supports: The Dock Supports position the heatsink above the device’s bottom edge by approximately 0.430 inches.
  • Fit w/ Stand Supports: The second generation High/Low Stand Supports use laptop support arms available in two sizes, large and small. The large arms position the front edge of heatsink approximately 2.5 inches from the device’s front edge. The small arms position the front edge of heatsink approximately 1.4 inches from the device’s front edge.

Testing

TESTING SPECIFICATIONS

SVALT model approximate performance comparison, graphic rendering Mx Cooling Performance

The Mx product line was designed to exceed everything that had come before with extreme cooling capabilities. The Mx's massive thermally conductive heatsink silently pulls heat from the laptop to help reduce temperatures and quiet built-in fans. While the Mx’s optional fan cooling system helps tackle extra high-intensity and long-duration workloads.

Test Results

SVALT product cooling and audio performance shown in the graph above is approximate and based on a wide range of averaged and normalized testing through conceptual research, product development and final production proving phases.

Test results vary depending on a product’s configuration, fan use, fan model, fan speed setting, laptop model, laptop configuration, laptop operation, workstation setup, external monitor setup, and overall testing conditions.

Test Conditions

Mx tests were conducted per SVALT’s testing guidelines that control testing conditions.

Test Laptop Configurations

Mx tests for all models and configurations were conducted with the laptop in closed-screen operation while connected to a single low-resolution external monitor. Comparison tests were also conducted with the screen open and without an external monitor for high and low stand models.

As a general condition for all laptop models, adding a high-resolution external monitors and/or multiple external monitors will increase demand on the laptop and generate more heat. Demand and heat generation can be reduced by using only the laptop’s built-in display, or by closing the built-in display and connected to a single low resolution external monitor.

Test Mx Model Configurations

Tests were conducted with multiple Mx model configurations. In general, results were more similar than dissimilar between the different Mx model configurations as they all share the same massive heatsink and all are available with an optional fans to boost cooling performance.

Mx Model Comparison

When selecting a Mx model, it is recommended to select a model based on a desired workstation setup, such as the dock supports for positioning the laptop upright with screen closed and moved aside to free up desk space, the high stand supports for improved screen viewing ergonomics with the laptop’s built-in screen, or the low stand supports for a low-profile setup.

However, if you would like to understand the differences between each Mx model’s cooling design, then see the following detailed comparisons.

New 2nd Gen Mx Models: Cooling design advantages per Mx model with new second generation supports:

MxSW2-hi
The second generation high stand supports use a totally new design that brings the following significant improvements:
  • Lower Heatsink Support Angle: Improves conductive cooling design by approximately halving the laptop support angle so that more of the laptop’s weight presses down onto the heatsink’s conductive coupling plate for increased heat transfer. The laptop support angle has been set to as low as possible while still retaining sufficient forward slope to hold the laptop in place.
  • Higher Heatsink Support Position: Improves airflow cooling design by approximately doubling the heatsink’s and 140mm fan’s minimum height above the desk surface. More open space under the heatsink increases passive airflows through the heatsink’s cooling fins for increased heat extraction. More open space under the 140mm fan reduces fan intake restriction for increased fan efficiency with lower noise and higher airflow.
  • Larger Heatsink Support Opening: Improves airflow cooling design by approximately doubling the heatsink support’s open area. More open area increases passive airflows through and around the heatsink, as well as increases active airflows into and out of the 140mm fan.
  • New Laptop Support Arms: Improves heatsink cooling design for both smaller and larger laptops by using new bolt-on laptop support arms of different sizes that optimally place the laptop for heatsink cooling.
  • New Heatsink Finish: Improves radiant passive cooling by increasing emissivity with a new matte black anodize finish.

MxSW2-lo
The second generation low stand supports use a totally new design that brings the following significant improvements:
  • Lower Heatsink Support Angle: Improves conductive cooling design by reducing the laptop support angle to a flat horizontal so that all of the laptop’s weight presses down onto the heatsink’s conductive coupling plate for increased heat transfer. The laptop support angle is adjustable and can be set to a flat horizontal position. When set to a low or flat horizontal position, then the laptop is more likely to slide or rotate on the heatsink’s smooth coupling surface.
  • Higher Heatsink Support Position: Improves airflow cooling design by approximately tripling the heatsink’s minimum height above the desk surface so that more airflow moves under, around and through the heatsink for increased heat extraction.
  • Larger Heatsink Support Opening: Improves airflow cooling design by approximately quadrupling the heatsink support’s open area for increased airflows through and around the heatsink.

MxDW2
The second generation dock supports use a refined design to bring the following improvements:
  • Raised Position: Improves airflow cooling design by raising the laptop and heatsink to a higher position for increased airflows under and around the laptop and heatsink.
  • Larger Openings: Improves airflow cooling design by enlarging the lower support cutout located behind the padded laptop support shelf for increased airflows under and around the laptop and heatsink.
  • New Heatsink Finish: Improves radiant passive cooling by increasing emissivity with a new matte black anodize finish.

All Mx Models
Cooling design advantages per Mx model configuration:
  • MxSW2-hi: The second generation high stand supports include numerous cooling design improvements with approximately the greatest cooling design advantages.
  • MxSW2-lo / MxSW-lo / MxS-lo / MxSW2-hi / MxSW-hi / MxS-hi: The low and high stand supports have a nearer to horizontal laptop support orientation, which allows the weight of the laptop to press down onto the heatsink’s conductive coupling plate, which in turn increases conductive heat transfer between the laptop and heatsink. The new MxSW2-lo second generation supports provide the option for a flat horizontal laptop position, while the new MxSW2-hi second generation supports reduce the laptop angle by approximately half of the first generation supports.
  • MxDW2 / MxDW / MxD: The dock supports allow for the simultaneous use of both the 140mm and 80mm fans, which increases both heatsink and laptop cooling. The extra large size of 140mm fan provides both maximum heatsink cooling. The 80mm fan is positioned to flush out hot air, and for the 2021+ MacBook Pro, and other laptops that include a center intake vent along the back/hinge edge, the 80mm fan drive cooling air into the center intake vent to directly cool processors.
  • MxDW2 / MxDW / MxD / MxSW2-hi / MxSW-hi / MxS-hi: The 140mm fan's larger size generates slightly more airflow for a given amount of noise generation. The 140mm fan's larger size spans the full width of the heatsink and nearly span the full length, which moves more cooling air over/through the heatsink cooling fins and removes more heat from the heatsink. The new MxSW2-hi second generation supports have approximately double the open area and approximately half the incline angle for improved fan airflow and increased fan efficiency.
  • MxDW2 / MxDW / MxD / MxSW2-lo / MxSW-lo / MxS-lo: The dock and low stand supports position laptops with a center intake vent so that the 80mm fan can simultaneously cool the heatsink and drive air into the laptop for direct internal processor cooling.
  • Mx All Models: The heatsink with a dark anodize aluminum finish has a slight improvement in emissivity for increased radiant cooling compared to the heatsink with raw aluminum finish, and the new deep matte black finish has a slight improvement over the prior space black finish. This is only a slight improvement that is most apparent with passive airflow cooling, and is less notable when a fan is added to provide active airflow cooling.

All Mx Models per Laptop Models
Cooling design advantages per laptop model:
  • All laptop models: The second generation high stand supports (MxSW2-hi) include numerous cooling design improvements with approximately the greatest cooling design advantages for all laptop models.
  • 2021+ 14-inch MacBook Pros: The second generation stands (MxSW2-hi / MxSW2-lo) use separate bolt-on laptop support arm modular components to position the laptop on the heatsink for optimal cooling. The arms are available in two sizes, large and small, that maintain the same high level of cooling optimization for both large and small laptops. Smaller 2021+ 14-inch MacBook Pro laptops benefit from unrestricted vent airflow for improved laptop built-in cooling efficiency, and offer an improvement in cooling with smaller laptops compared to first generation stands.
  • 2021+ 16/14-inch MacBook Pros: The 2021+ MacBook Pro includes a built-in fan cooling system with a center intake vent along the bottom/hinge edge, as well as two exhaust vents on both sides of the intake vent. The MxDW2 / MxDW / MxD models with both 140mm and 80mm fans running simultaneously increases cooling performance. The MxSW2-lo / MxSW-lo / MxS-lo models with 80mm fan also increases cooling performance. This is the case for this laptop model, and for laptops with similar built-in cooling systems.
  • 2022+ 15/13-inch MacBook Airs: The 2022+ MacBook Air does not include a built-in fan cooling system or associated venting. The MxSW2-hi / MxSW-hi / MxS-hi models with 140mm fan increases cooling performance. The MxDW2 / MxDW / MxD models with 140mm fan also increases cooling performance. This is the case for this laptop model, and for laptops with similar built-in cooling systems.
